Art Car Day 4 -- On Andy Warhol...

Today we worked on touching up the paint on the car. Several of the areas looked spotty, and so we added totally new coats of paint to them. Additionally, we added paint in new areas of the car, such as the blue on the roof and the black on the numbers. Everyone is excited about how the car is coming together, and how great it looks so far. It was very hot outside, and the people who were working on painting got really hot, and even a bit sunburned. Some of the people did work inside, however, like creating stencils. Today we got a stencil done and put on the car for the Brillo box. A surprising amount of work goes into creating those, but thanks to hardworking students we got it done.
Today I also did some research into Andy Warhol and who he was, since we were making an art car inspired by him and his works. A lot of his pop art comments on American consumerism and culture. One great example of this are his prints of Marilyn Monroe. By reproducing her image over and over, it ceases to be about a person, and instead becomes about an icon or commodity. Some of his work like this comments on the American culture of celebrity worship. In addition to creating interesting art, Warhol lived a very interesting life. In addition to creating prints and paintings, Warhol was also a photographer and filmmaker. He didn’t stop here though—Warhol also produced an experimental rock band called The Velvet Underground, and founded Interview magazine. He certainly had no lack of talents. His personal life was quite interesting as well; Warhol was an openly gay man before the gay liberation movement, and his New York studio, The Factory, was a meeting place for groups as diverse as drag queens, intellectuals, and celebrities. I had no idea that Warhol had so many talents and lived such an unique life. --Kyle, class of 2019
