Today was an extremely cold fourth day with temperatures reaching the low forties. This prompted the art car group to stay inside and work on the mushrooms that are going to be placed all over the car. The first thing we did was stick metal wires into the foam mushrooms we carved yesterday. We decided to do this to make the mushrooms more sturdy because we were worried the mushrooms might break off when driving the art car in the wind. After putting wires in all of the mushrooms, we began to paint the mushrooms in a white coat. Once the mushrooms were painted and then left to dry, we painted the cap of the mushrooms in a red coat. Our group decided to paint the mushrooms to look like the popular fungi called amanita muscaria (the mushroom that has a red top with white dots).
After lunch, we kept on making mushrooms. We got another shipment of foam blocks that we immediately got to work carving into mushrooms. Since everyone is an out-of-the-box thinker, we thought it was best for two people to carve the mushrooms out of foam, one person to paint the mushrooms in a white coat, and another person to paint the top of the mushroom in a red coat. This way we wouldn't all have to be switching around stations. Further, the art car group was missing three people today, which made it so we didn't have as many hands working on the mushrooms. This didn't stop the group, as everyone picked up the slack somewhere to make as many mushrooms as possible. Towards the end of the day, our group chose to glue one of the mushrooms onto the car to see how it would hold up over the weekend. This way it would inform us if we needed to use a different glue, use more glue, or possibly use a different paint that can withstand things like the rain. After we glued the mushroom on, we cleaned up the room for Monday. Overall, this week was an incredible success. We all got a lot done for the new and improved forest art car.
